Questions Of Slavery And Worship

We each go through the day devoting some portion of our time and attention to different things. It may be your occupation or your family. It could be church or a hobby. No matter what you give yourself to, take a moment to consider what you are getting in return.
Are we in control of our activities and emotional investments, or have such things taken control of us?
Have we, in fact, become slaves?
I believe we each engage in worshipful behavior with each passing day. We dedicate our lives, in increasingly greater amounts, to things that are ever fleeting. To people who are either unfit or unable to pay any dividend into our lives. In many cases, behaviors, interests or possessions, that were once of sound virtue, have become perverted into time consuming monsters.
Maybe we are worshiping the wrong things, or the wrong people.
Any amount of research into the origins of the word "worship" will show you that it was originally intended to be reserved for reverence or homage given to a deity or sacred person.
Using that as a guide, decide what is sacred in your life. What do you pay homage to every day?
If we were true to the original meaning, we would only worship God, and I believe He takes cares of those who worship Him and follow His lead.
For all the religious talk out there, a relationship with God is really that easy. It's a friendship. Simple.
You talk to your friend, you do things for your friend, you learn from your friend.
Look around at all the possessions you have. All the things you serve and worship and work for every day. How many of them take care of you, like a good friend should?
When you worship your item or person of choice, are you satisfied? Do you feel at peace, having had your needs met? Is your thirst quenched?

Are you worshiping, or are you a slave?

Thanks, Sha, for this "pearl" of a post. I like the way you suggested that we consider the results of our pursuits! Nice tie in to John 4, one of favorite passages.

I saved this one to my desktop!!
