Who Says You Can't Go Home Again?

The past two weekends have seen me/us take a road trip back home twice. Anyone who spends leisure time with me knows my camera is always at the ready. Here is a walk, via pictures, through the past two weekends.
(Click on any photo for an expanded view)
Hillsong and E.J. welcomed me and mom for a special morning in NYC. E.J. had us behind the scenes for sound check and an amazing morning.
If you've ever been to a concert or show, there is likely one person you don't see much of. I guarantee you hear him though. The Audio Engineer keeps his finger on the pulse and energy of the show and his ears tuned to the music and message. That's E.J. and the console, making it all happen.

It was amazing for me to experience the events of our morning at Hillsong, much of it being created by my cousin. It was equally moving to experience what is happening in my city with this group of people. To see so many people, in unison, searching for real peace is awe inspiring.
Me and mom. I have grown cognizant of the fact that mom "gets it". She understands what is important in life. Her lack of street-smarts not withstanding, she is quite the progressive thinker. Need proof? Here she is pictured in Irving Plaza, NYC. Fifteen years ago, she would have been unlikely to darken the doors of a place like this. Now, all smiles.
If you needed further verification....we all had Sunday Brunch at the venerable Pete's Tavern in Chelsea.
That's right, Barbara...in a bar....on a Sunday...in Chelsea. Priceless!
Footnote...E.J. has been mixing at Hillsong for a number of years now. It seems that nobody in the organization knows what "E.J." stands for. ....and he's not letting on. THAT is freakin' funny stuff!!

Our second weekend trip was put on the calendar to allow Kris to get Evan's name added to a tattoo she got a few years back.
First things first, however. FOOD! John's on Bleecker steeet has long been our favorite pizza stop. Now, Aiden has been indoctrinated as well.
A day in NYC means a lot of walking. Aiden did a great job keeping pace all day. This photo was taken in the East Village, where his grandfather, great grandfather, mother and father all earned a living at one time or another. Clearly, he feels right at home.
We stopped in at the storied 9th precinct where Kris caught up with a few friends. No sooner did we get in the door, then one of them started telling the current Desk Officer how Kris earned the moniker "shitty Smitty"
Aiden trying on the cells for size.

 Time for the ink!
Again, Aiden makes himself comfortable on the ferry ride(s)

The truth is, NYC is small. It's barely 23 miles in total area. On this island, there are many neighborhoods, many flavors, many sounds, many sights. I maintain there is nothing that cannot be experienced here, nothing that cannot be learned. It's a truly magical place. Find me another 23 miles like this somewhere....go on, I dare you.

"Shitty Smitty"... That's a funny story. Thanks for the pics. Love that Aiden gets to know the greatest city in the world.

Today is January 17, 2016. A little after 10:00 this morning I received a phone call from Shamus asking me if I wanted to go to NYC!! Of course, I said YES!! I climbed lots of steps and rode on the subway!! Then there was an elevator, an escalator, and more steps to the Top of the Rock where we enjoyed panoramic views of THE CITY!! Memories were awakened as I watched ice skaters at Rockefeller Center and worshippers at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Aiden and Evan offered pieces of pretzels with open hands to well fed city squirrels, Thin and toasty crusted margherita pizza with pepperoni and arugula, a huge mound of uniquely tasting vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup, and homemade chocolate chip style cookies were the delicious yummies we had waited for!! As we left the Big Apple snow that was melting on the streets settled on tree limbs that bade us farewell. The ride home abounded with storytelling adventures of eyewitness accounts of births, brilliance, brutality, and bravery, I thank the 1611 Smiths for inviting Nana to tag along on your latest trip to the capital of the world!!!
